Midland
Midland is an important strategic metropolitan centre for the City of Swan. It is an established mixed-use area, including industrial, commercial and residential land and is home to a significant number of retail, commercial and industrial enterprises.
Situated 20 kilometres north east of the Perth CBD, Midland is the gateway to Western Australia's northern and eastern regional areas with the Great Eastern Highway, Great Northern Highway and the Perth-Midland passenger train line all leading into the area. With the Roe and Reid Highways converging in Midland, access to other major metropolitan transport routes such as Welshpool Road, the Albany and Leech Highways and the Freeway (north and south) is only a few kilometres away.
The catchment area for Midland extends far beyond the City of Swan's boundaries and includes the Perth Hills, Chittering, Gingin, the Wheatbelt and the Avon Valley, all of which contribute to a large customer and employee base.
Since 2000, new residential and commercial subdivisions have been created; the Midland Railway Workshops have been rehabilitated; apartments, cafes, restaurants and shops in the heart of Midland have been built; and the area has been revitalised with landscaping, street furniture and public art. Other key developments include the State's largest police complex and the Midland Health Campus which will function as the nucleus for a wide range of businesses in the Health Care sector. Completion of the 326 bed hospital is planned for early 2014.
Over the next 20 years, it is expected that the redevelopment of Midland will see the creation of some 7,500 jobs and an injection of $1.22 billion into the local economy.
