Downloadable Documents
The City of Swan website contains a range of downloadable documents and publications in PDF or Microsoft Office format (Word, Powerpoint and Excel) . These documents have been included for a number of reasons and are generally larger publications or reports, printed brochures, and forms that would be unsuitable to include as web pages.
You can access these documents through the publications tab at the top of the site.
You'll find some handy hints below on how to download documents successfully and view them on your computer.
PDF Documents
The PDF file format is a common internet file format (PDF stands for Portable Document Format).
It's used for electronic distribution because it faithfully preserves the look and feel of the original document complete with fonts, colours, images, and layout. It also can be used across many different types of computers and browsers.
Opening PDF Files
To open a PDF file you have two options. You can download a program called Acrobat Reader and install it onto your computer. The program is available free of charge from the Adobe Acrobat site.
The second option is to use an online PDF conversion tool. You can visit this page on the Adobe Acrobat website and type in the address of a PDF file and get it to translate the file into a more readable format while you wait. Or you can email the address of the file (or the file itself) to Adobe, and they will email a translation back. These translations of the files may not be as clearly formatted as the original PDF file.
Microsoft Word Documents
You will find a number of files on our website that have been created using Microsoft Word. Although this programme is widely used throughout the world, we understand that not everyone has access to the software on their computers. Below you will find instructions on how to download and install a Word Viewer onto your computer.
Opening Microsoft Word Files
If you want to download and read a Microsoft Word document, but don't have the programme installed on your computer then you can download a small programme which will let you view the file on the Microsoft Site.
Follow the instructions for downloading and installing the programme called Word Viewer. Once installed the programme will enable you to open documents saved in the following formats:
- Word Document (*.docx)
- Word Macro-Enabled Document (*.docm)
- Rich Text Format (.rtf)
- Text (.txt)
- Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml)
- WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd)
- WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd)
- Works 6.0 (.wps)
- Works 7.0 (.wps)
- XML (.xml)
Note: When you use the Word Viewer to view files that are saved in these formats, you will see a Word version of the file. The following Word 2007 items will be affected:
- Features that do not exist in Word 2003
- Layout that uses properties that do not exist in Word 2003
