Discounted Insurance For Community Groups

A pilot program offering up to 80 per cent discount on insurance policies to voluntary community associations – a State first – will be launched in Midland on August 31.

City of Swan Mayor, Charlie Zannino, said the new program had been negotiated between the City and its insurance broker, LGIS.

“It will provide real relief for volunteer groups which work tirelessly for their local communities,” Cr Zannino said.

“The City is completely behind the venture which I’m sure will be a model for other cities and shires.”

He said insurance premiums were a big expense for non-commercial groups.

“Having such a significant insurance discount will enable groups such as residents’ and ratepayers’ associations to safely carry out their activities to help their communities,” he said.

“It gives financial protection and peace of mind for group members, volunteers and participants.”

The pilot project will offer discounted Public Liability and Voluntary Workers’ Cover to qualifying associations.

“The City respects the contributions local residents’ associations are making to their communities and this is a significant step in our continued support of positive and productive partnerships with the community,” Cr Zannino said.

“It’s also a way of developing a safe working environment and conducting safe work practices for its members and the wider public.”

Free risk management training will be offered to all community groups in the City to enable them to create and put in place risk management plans as a way of creating a safe work environment.

Groups which are entitled to the discounts must:

  • be independent, incorporated and not-for-profit,
  • represent a suburb,
  • work cooperatively and collectively with the City of Swan and similar community groups with the objective of enhancing the lifestyle of the suburb in natural, built, social and economic environments; and
  • have its members living or working in or adjacent to the suburb its represents.

Interested groups can obtain an Expression of Interest pack and launch invitation from their local Place Community Development Coordinator by telephoning 9267 9267.
