Upgrade planned for Gnangara Road

Upgrade work is being planned for Gnangara Road.

It will be upgraded to a four-lane, dual carriageway standard from Drumpellier Drive to Pinaster Parade.

City of Swan Mayor, Charlie Zannino, said the project would also include the provision of traffic signals at the intersection of Gnangara Road and Drumpellier Drive.

“The community has raised the issue of this intersection with us on numerous occasions, with concerns about the traffic flow and safety,” he said.

“Furthermore, there is increasing pressure to upgrade the whole length of Gnangara Road to a dual carriageway as the existing traffic volumes have exceeded the recommended capacity for a single carriageway.

“The section from Pinaster Parade to Drumpellier Drive will be the first phase of a staged upgrade of Gnangara Road to a four-lane dual carriageway from Alexander Drive to West Swan Road.

“The scheduled works will provide a safer road environment, with an improved, signal controlled intersection as well as a wider roadway able to deal with higher traffic volumes.”

The project has received funding from Main Roads WA but is still in the planning stage.

Ellenbrook Ward Councillor, Patty Williams, said works are anticipated to be completed by December 2012.

“We are aware there will be considerable disruption to the traffic flow on Gnangara Road and to surrounding areas during the works,” she said.

“Because of this, we are engaged in a comprehensive consultation exercise with motorists and local residents to minimise the impact, and are considering a range of possible solutions, including the construction of temporary traffic lanes, off peak working and various traffic management treatments.

“While there will be some delays, we are confident residents will appreciate that the work is being done to deliver an improved, safer road and intersection.”

Cr Williams said the City will engage road users and local residents through various community functions in the coming months.

“Updates will be provided throughout the project via local community networks, the City of Swan website, local media and community information nights,” she said.
