Altone Place is a predominantly residential area with a population of 21,445 and 7,855 dwellings as counted in the 2011 Census. Located in the south-west area of the City of Swan, Altone includes the suburbs of Beechboro, Kiara, Lockridge and parts of Caversham, Cullacabardee, West Swan and Whiteman.
Settlement of the area dates from the 1890s, when Beechboro was subdivided into farmlets. Some growth took place in the early 1900s, aided by the construction of housing for soldier settlement in Lockridge in the 1920s.
The most significant development occurred in the post-war years, particularly from the late 1960s, when public housing was constructed in Lockridge. More recently, there has been substantial development in Beechboro.
Nearly 75 per cent of all households in Altone Place are family households, with 52 per cent of those having children. More than 82 per cent of Altone's residents are aged less than 55 years and 30 per cent are less than 20 years of age. Almost 13 per cent of residents are aged between 55 and 69, and less than 5 per cent are 70 years of age or more.
Major features and attractions of the area include:
- Altone Park (part of Whiteman Park);
- Altone Park Market Centre;
- Altone Park Leisure Centre;
- Altone Park Golf Course; and
- numerous primary and secondary schools.
