The City of Swan conducts Australian Citizenship Ceremonies on behalf of the Department of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), for residents of the City. Ceremonies are conducted approximately every 6-8 weeks with a larger more formal ceremony on Australia Day – 26th January.
To become an Australian Citizen, you will be required to do the following:
- Contact the Department of Immigration to obtain an Australian Citizenship application pack
- Send the completed application form and payment to the Department of Immigration
- If and when your application is approved, the Department of Immigration will send you a letter of approval
- The Department of Immigration will forward your certificate of Australian Citizenship to the Immigration Office in Canberra to be signed
- The Department of Immigration’s Canberra office will send your signed certificate to the City of Swan
- The City of Swan will book you into one of the Ceremonies and send you an invitation informing you of the time, location and date of the Ceremony
- The City of Swan will also arrange for you to have a private Ceremony should you be unable to attend the public Ceremony or you require your Citizenship as a matter of urgency
An applicant is eligible to become an Australian Citizen if he or she:
- Is a permanent resident of Australia;
- Has lived in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of at least two years in the last five years and a total of a least one year in the last two years;
- Is able to speak and understand basic English;
- Is of good character; and
- Intends to reside in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia
Fee of - $120.00
Aged & Disability Pension holders - $20.00
Applicants are required to attend an interview.
It is important to note that we cannot organise for you to attend a Citizenship Ceremony until your application of Australian Citizenship has been approved by DIMA and the City has received your Certificate of Australian Citizenship.
