Adding Value Through Tourism The City of Swan’s Strategic Plan for Tourism
The Swan Valley and surrounds is regarded as one of Western Australia’s premier tourism regions attracting over 690,000 visitors per annum. Its proximity to the city (13kms) and airports (5kms domestic) gives the Swan Valley huge advantages over other tourism destinations.
In 2002 the City of Swan Council endorsed the implementation of a number of new roles in tourism collectively termed the Adding Value Through Tourism (AVTT) project. The City now operates the Swan Valley Visitor Centre and employs 3 FTEs in tourism.
The “Adding Value Through Tourism” project (AVTT) is a strategic tourism project developed to promote sustainable economic development based on competitive advantage, maximising natural and cultural resources, and building social capital. This role has been achieved in strong partnership with the tourism industry, community and government.
Recent DITR modelling demonstrated that in 2003 the Swan Valley generated approximately $96.98million in tourism visitor spending and was the primary financial support for 3.7% of City of Swan residents. An average of 80% of visitors to the Swan Valley come from the Perth Metro Area.
The project establishes a focused and professionally-managed role for the City in four key areas with objectives set for each:
The City of Swan is one of very few Western Australian local governments to have taken such a pro-active approach to tourism and is generally considered to be one of the leaders of tourism development at the local level in WA.
