Ellenbrook Skate Park to be officially opened Four major skate competitions have been held the Ellenbrook’s the Coolamon skate park.
Organised by the City of Swan’s Ellenbrook youth team the competitions were run to increase young people’s and the local community’s positive engagement with the skate park.
City of Swan Ellenbrook ward councillor Natasha Cheung said the competitions were an initiative of the YAC What Say Youth Project which is funded in partnership with the Rotary Club and is designed to motivate young people to participate in and contribute to their community, to drive change and to build their leadership skills. “Throughout the events the City of Swan team held skate park user group meetings where young people joined together to work through ideas and help with the development and evaluation of the project. “Local businesses and community members worked with the City of Swan throughout the project.
“The City’s team was able to gain great support with Bike Force, Just-Stand model and hobbies and Planet Surf who donated some of the prizes.
“Local filmmaker and skater Dion Cochrane offered his knowledge and skills to film and assist with the running of the events and, another local community member, DJ Silence provided some great youth friendly music.
“This was a fantastic initiative and shows the positive result of the community, business and the City of Swan working together.’’ Cr Cheung said the young skaters, scooters and BMXers behaved exceptionally well, offering staff help and expressing to staff how much they enjoyed the event.
A few parents, adults and the police also came down to watch the talented skaters.
The grand finale for these activities will be the official skate park launch planned for Saturday December 5, 2009 at the Ellenbrook Skate Park on Coolamon Oval.
The skate park launch will run from 10am until 2pm and will be a fun filled day with demonstrations, competitions, music, a bouncy castle, urban art, food, drinks, prizes and the presentation of the film from the previous competitions.
