Malaga Local Area
Malaga is an existing industrial centre and the City's major employment centre.
It’s not clear whether the name Malaga was adopted from the Spanish city of the same name or the Aboriginal word “malaga” meaning “ironstone”. In 1963, the area was reserved for future use as a light industrial area however, significant development of Malaga, including roads and industrial buildings, did not occur until the 1980s. Over the past 30 years, this important industrial area has grown rapidly and now has more than 3,000 businesses with a workforce of almost 16,000 people.
Located in the south west corner of the City of Swan, Malaga is approximately 650 hectares in area and provides an excellent location for light industry and service establishments. Centrally located in Perth's north eastern suburbs in a light, clean industrial area, Malaga offers large areas for expansion at affordable rates. It is just 12 kilometres from the Perth CBD and 15 minutes from the Kewdale interstate road/rail freight terminals, Perth’s domestic and international airports and the port of Fremantle. It also has quick and easy access to the Reid, Roe, Tonkin, Great Northern and Great Eastern Highways, the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways and Alexander Drive. This is a significant advantage to industrial businesses within Malaga because as well as being well connected to road, rail, air and sea transport, they are also well connected to other local industrial areas such as Bayswater, Kewdale, Balcatta, Bassendean, Wangara and Osborne Park.
Due to its location and bordered by residential suburbs on all sides, Malaga has a large number of consumers nearby as well as the potential to source local workers from a relatively large labour pool.
