The cat laws are not only about responsible pet ownership, they are also aimed at reducing the number of unwanted cats in the community and the number that are euthanised each year. Microchipping and registration will also ensure your cat is returned to you if they become lost.

Number allowed

If you wish to own more than two cats, the local laws require you to apply for a permit. However, at the moment, the City is simply keeping a register of customers who would be affected if permits were introduced. To register, please contact the City of Swan on 9267 9267. If you own more than two cats, please ensure that they have adequate exercise space.

Cat Act 2011

The Cat Act 2011 requires the identification, registration and sterilisation of domestic cats, and gives Local Governments the power to administer and enforce the legislation.

The legislation will provide for better management of the unwanted impacts of cats on the community and the environment, as well as encourage responsible cat ownership.

The new cat laws are not only about responsible pet ownership, they are also aimed at reducing the number of unwanted cats in the community and the number that are euthanised each year. Microchipping and registration will make it easier to identify the cat and reunite it with its owner.
