Food safety

Whether eating food prepared in the home or from a restaurant it is important the food we consume is safe. It is estimated there are 5.4 million cases of food poisoning every year in Australia which results in 1.2 million people seeing a doctor, 300,000 antibiotic prescriptions, 2.1 million days off work, even more severe consequences – 120 deaths and it is estimated that this costs the economy $1.2 billion per year.

The City of Swan has a team of dedicated Environmental Health Officers who work closely with local businesses and community groups who prepare food for sale.

Did you know there are over 1300 food premises operating within the City of Swan? These range from very low risk right up to high risk premises. The City’s Health Services conducts regular unannounced inspections of food businesses to ensure they are operating and being maintained to an appropriate standard. As an example the majority of premises are classified as medium risk and are inspected at least twice a year.
