Abrasive blasting and spray painting

Abrasive blasting and spray painting operations must be conducted so that dust and overspray does not enter the environment. This typically requires the use of a suitably designed and constructed booth or enclosure.

The Environmental Protection (Abrasive Blasting) Regulations 1998 and Environmental Protection (Metal Coating) Regulations 2001 may also be relevant and need to be complied with.

It is an offence under the Environmental Protection (Unauthorised Discharges) Regulations 2004 for paint to be released into the environment from commercial operations.

Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety Codes of Practice provide guidance for the design and construction of abrasive blasting and spray painting booths.
