Sometimes when there is a fault with the sewer a sewage overflow will occur.  If you see this occuring please report the situation on 13 13 75.  Water Corporation will fix the fault and be responsible for cleaning up and disinfecting the area.

Private Property

If the cause of the problem was a fault with the sewer then Water Corporation will fix the fault and be responsible for cleaning up, disinfecting the area and repair of any damaged property.  If however the cause of the problem is to do with the plumbing on private property then the owner of the property will be responsible for cleaning up, disinfecting the area and other associated costs.  People should contact their insurance company immediately if in this situation.

Houses are designed with an overflow gully located on the outside so if there is a problem it should occur outside the building. However sometimes these do not always work as intended and sewage can overflow inside the residence. For information on dealing with these situations including what can be safely cleaned and disinfected and what should be disposed of please refer to the Department of Health's web page on domestic wastewater overflows.
