Midland is the Strategic Metropolitan Centre for the north east sub-region of the Perth metropolitan area. It is also the established home of the City’s Administration and Operations centres.

The 2016 Census shows Midland as the City of Swan’s second largest employment centre (after Malaga) with more than 14,000 workers in the local area. Following the opening of the new public/private Midland Hospital, General Practice (GP) Super Clinic and associated specialty and support medical services, the Health Care and Social Assistance sector became the largest industry of employment in the Midland local area with 22% of the workforce employed in this sector.

With the State’s largest police complex and a number of other government departments and agencies located in Midland, the Public Administration and Safety industry is the second largest employment sector with 19% of Midland’s workforce.

As the biggest retail centre in the north eastern area of metropolitan Perth, it is not surprising that the Retail Trade sector provides the third largest number of employment opportunities with 18% of Midland’s workers employed in retail.

Development of the precinct east of Cale Street is well underway with completion of the major expansion of the Midland Gate shopping centre further strengthening Midland’s role as a Strategic Metropolitan Centre.
