This suburb takes its name from two Aboriginal words “koong” and “mia”, which roughly translate to “home on the hillside”. Koongamia was formerly the Greenmount Picnic Reserve, until it was developed in 1955 by the State Housing Commission. In 2003, the area was rejuvenated under the Department of Housing and Works’ New Living Program.
