Better Beginnings

Better Beginnings is a family literacy program aimed at children from birth to five years and their families. City of Swan Library Specialists promote this program through the Child Health nurses at your local Child Health Centre, your local public library and, when your child starts attending kindergarten, through their local school and community kindergartens.

Better Beginnings: At birth - Each baby attending the Child Health Centre will receive a bright yellow bag containing, amongst other things, an alphabet frieze, a rhymetime booklet with a DVD, information about the benefits of reading to babies and an attractive board book so they can start right away.

Better Beginnings Sing With Me: At two years of age, every child will receive a Better Beginnings Sing With Me reading pack providing parents with lots of resources to use at home.  The pack includes a nursery rhyme CD and booklet with lyrics and activities, a nursery rhyme puzzle magnet, your own fun book to sing along to and a list of great books for toddlers to look for at your local public library.

Better Beginnings Four to Five: All Western Australian schools and community kindergartens are invited to participate in this program, in which free reading packs are provided to every kindergarten-aged child to take home. Schools are required to register for the program each year on the Better Beginnings website. The packs will then be provided to the school by the local public library. The kindergarten reading pack contains a beautiful Australian children's picture book, a fun game to accompany the book, a green library bag and information for parents about books and reading

Families with home-schooled children can contact their local public library to arrange to collect their free reading packs.
