The City of Swan Council is taking steps to unify and improve its decision-making to ensure good governance for the community.

On Monday, March 13, Council unanimously resolved to adopt an action plan to address concerns raised by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the action plan is focussed on achieving unification between Councillors to improve decision-making.

“Our community and administration expect a Council who can work well together to make strong decisions, represent our community and reflect good governance,” he said.

“Last night, we unanimously committed to drawing a line in the sand and turning things around by treating each other with a greater level of respect, improving our decision-making at Council meetings and undertaking additional professional development to improve our performance as elected members.”

In November 2022, the City received correspondence from the DLGSC outlining concerns it had around relationships between Council members and Council decision-making, and excessive requesting of information relating to Council meetings, Code of Conduct complaints and legal services expenditure.

The City received further correspondence in December 2022 requesting Council urgently develop a clear plan to address the problem areas and issues.

The City will now provide an official response to the Department’s correspondence and move forward to implement the steps outlined in the action plan, effective immediately.

The action plan can be found in the agenda of the Special Council Meeting.
