The City of Swan congratulates Executive Director Operations Jim Coten for his recognition at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Awards in the Western Australia Division.

IPWEA is the national industry body for public works, and their annual awards recognise excellence in innovation, development, construction and management of public works projects.

Mr Coten received the highly prestigious F.J Bryant Outstanding Service Award for his consistent and constructive contribution to the Institute.

After becoming Executive Director Operations in 2007, Mr Coten helped to create the City’s overwhelmingly successful Graduate Engineer Program.

The program provides recent graduates with opportunities to develop professional skills, undertake tailored learning and development activities, and receive mentoring from senior staff.

Mr Coten, who did not know he had been nominated, said he was humbled by the recognition.

“I think something I’ve tried to instil in all staff is the honour and privilege and the noble work that we do in providing those services to improve the quality of life for our community," he said.

In addition to Mr Coten’s recognition, the City’s use of sustainable asphalt as a recycled material was Highly Commended for Excellence in the Environment and Sustainability category, with judges noting the trial being the first of its kind in WA.

The City was a finalist in four other categories, including Emerging Young Leader, with Asset Management Leadership Support, Mashallah Love, being nominated.

City of Swan Chief Executive Stephen Cain said he was proud of both Mr Coten and the City’s achievements.

“The F.J Bryant Outstanding Service Award is a highly prestigious honour and is a credit to Jim’s impressive work over the years,” he said.

“This was also the fifth year in a row that a City of Swan employee has been a finalist for the IPWEA Emerging Young Leader award.

“This is a reflection of Jim’s commitment to the success of the City’s Graduate Engineer Program, which continues to produce outstanding professionals."
