Midland takes its name from the Midland Railway Company, which was contracted in 1886 to build a railway line to Geraldton. The Midland township grew around the railway station and quickly became the commercial and administrative centre for the City of Swan. Historical landmarks include the Midland Town Hall, with its unique clock feature and the recently renovated Railway Workshops. In 2000, the Midland Redevelopment Authority commenced its urban renewal project for mixed-use development.
