Grow a cooler, greener neighbourhood
Branching Out is a free City of Swan program that helps residents create cooler, greener homes and neighbourhoods.
The 2026 program attracted 147 registrations and 95 workshop attendees. Two pop-up sessions at Beechboro Community Hub also engaged 43 children and 39 adults in conversations about urban greening.
The workshops provided practical advice about sandy soils, hot and shaded areas, waterwise garden design, verge planting and plants that support local wildlife.
Presenters included Neville Passmore, Green Life Soil Co, Budding Concepts and Yann Toussaint. Popular topics included improving soil, caring for canopy trees and creating attractive, waterwise verge gardens.
Residents who completed the program surveys went into the draw to win a one-hour garden consultation with Neville Passmore. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Margaret Collins.
Branching Out showed that everyone can help create greener neighbourhoods, whether by planting a tree, improving soil, choosing waterwise plants or creating habitat for native wildlife.
