Your library membership

Joining one of our libraries is free and easy. Anyone is welcome to become a City of Swan library member, including temporary residents and visitors. If you'd like to be an active member of our libraries, you'll need to comply with our Membership Guidelines.(PDF, 64KB)

You’ll find it easy to borrow, reserve and renew your loans and manage your details online.

How do I become a member?

You can sign up online, or visit your nearest City of Swan library. Visit your nearest branch to collect your card. If you are under 18 you will need to bring a parent or guardian.

Once registered, you can start reserving items straight away. You will also have immediate access to our wide range of digital resources, including eBooksaudiobooksdigital magazines and streaming movies.

What can I borrow?

Library members can borrow up to 30 physical items at any given time, and can also borrow items from the eLibrary (e.g. eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines).

We have a range of items available to loan, including:

How long can I keep the items?

You can borrow available items from City of Swan libraries for four weeks and items can easily be renewed by phone, in person at your nearest branch, or via the online catalogue by signing in to your account.

How can I renew my loans?

You can renew your items:

You won't be able to renew items if:

  • They are requested by another member
  • They have already been renewed twice
  • They are long overdue

How can I reserve an item?

You can reserve items through the library catalogue, or by contacting your nearest branch. You will receive a notification via email when the item is available to collect.

How can I request an item that you don't have?

We are always looking for ways our collections can meet your needs and interests. If the item you’re after isn’t at one of our library branches, you can place a request via our online Item Request form, or ask our staff to assist you.

We often purchase items you request, which means other patrons have a chance to enjoy them too. We also have access to the state-wide Inter-library loans system.

How do I return my loans?

You can return your items at any of the City of Swan's six libraries during normal opening hours. Remember, many of our libraries are open on weekends for your convenience. Items can be returned at any branch regardless of where they were loaned.

If you can't make it during open hours, simply pop your returns in either of our after-hours return chutes. An after-hours return chute is located at the Guildford Public Library or you can also access the after-hours return chute located at the Beechboro Public Library during the opening times of the adjoining Swan Active Beechboro complex.

Why do I have to wait in a queue to borrow eLibrary items?

When libraries pay for access to eBooks and eAudiobooks for their users, they usually pay for each digital 'copy' which is made available to loan. This means that, much like a print book, you may have to reserve an eBook or eAudiobook and wait for it to be returned by another library user.
