It’s time for City of Swan’s second-hand sellers and seekers to follow the Garage Sale Trail, Australia’s biggest thrifty treasure hunt.
The Garage Sale Trail is Australia's largest coordinated garage sale event, encouraging communities to be part of a national movement committed to promoting sustainability.
Last year, over 400,000 Australians shopped at more than 13,000 garage sales across two weekends in November, keeping more than 418 tonnes of stuff in use and out of landfill. Australians are one of the biggest consumers of clothes in the world, on average buying 55 new clothing items per year.
Research from The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) shows that simply extending the life of one item of clothing by nine months can cut its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 20 to 30 per cent.
During November 8-9 and 15-16, millions of pre-loved items will go up for sale, making second-hand sellers some money, bargain-buyers happy, and most importantly, saving tonnes of stuff from landfill. Last year, 3,405 City of Swan residents hosted a garage sale and/or shopped the trail at over 84 events.
The outcome? More than five tonnes of pre-loved items were diverted from a life in landfill. That’s 8,897 items sold or reused over two weekends, with a $40,295 resale value.
As a Swan resident, it’s free to take part – and you don’t need a garage (or even a front yard). Anyone can get involved; you can sell on one day or more from home, join a local market, or team up with neighbours for a thrifty street party.
Plus, there are tonnes of free tips, promotional materials and support to help you sell more. Register your sale in the City of Swan and support your community. Even if you can’t host a sale, you can shop the trail.
