There are many ways you can help conserve our local environment, check out the initiatives below.
Do you feel frustrated by seeing litter lying around your street, park or local beach? Then why not adopt that spot and volunteer to help keep your spot litter-free.
Individuals, community groups, businesses or school communities can volunteer with the Adopt-a-Spot program and contribute to a cleaner environment. You receive free resources to help, insurance cover if you need it and an Adoption Certificate.

Clean Up Australia Day is the nation's largest community-based environmental event and is held on the first Sunday of March each year. Thousands of Australians participate by cleaning up their local environment, collecting and removing rubbish.
Every year, the City of Swan supports community and school groups to participate by picking up the collected rubbish and recyclables from agreed collection points.

A Friends Group usually consists of a few people working together to conserve and protect a local reserve under the management of City of Swan.
Friends Groups work voluntarily in their own time and at their own pace.
Activities you can get involved with include:
- Planting native trees
- Removing weeds and rubbish
- Dieback control
- Protecting and restoring habitat for native species
- Creekline restoration.
The City of Swan supports Friends Groups by providing:
- Environmental and technical advice
- Training and education
- Funding and budget assistance
- Seedlings to plant in the reserve
- Insurance and safety gear.

Plastic Free July is a global movement helping millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.
The City of Swan runs a series of events throughout the month of July and promotes a range of ways you can support this initiative, including the ten common areas where you can avoid plastic.

Switch Your Thinking helps residents live and work to meet their needs without jeopardising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Through the initiative, residents and businesses can access information and education materials, attend community events and participate in iconic projects.
Switch Your Thinking also partners with local businesses to offer residents discounts on products to help them cut waste and reduce energy and water use.

Thinking Green is a free community sustainable living workshop series presented by the City of Swan from January to December each year. These are split into two month programs which align with the Noongar seasons.
Thinking Green inspires participants to change their lifestyle to improve their well-being and be kinder to the environment.
Waterwise verges use less water and fertiliser than traditional lawn verges. They save you money, have better environmental values and look superb.

The Keep Australia Beautiful Council provides free learning sessions for primary and secondary schools wanting to learn how to stop littering behaviour at school. The Clean Schools program provides a step-by-step guide on how to run a school litter prevention program and regular newsletters are issued.
