Air quality

Under health legislation, it’s against the law to cause the accumulation of impurities, smokes and gases which are offensive, injurious or potentially dangerous to health.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation(open in new window) (DWER) manages environmental pollution in Western Australia. For air quality data see the Air quality index(open in new window) on the DWER's website.

When wood or vegetation is burnt, the smoke contributes to the pollution of our air. Smoke may be a nuisance in urban areas when produced in excessive quantities. Negative health impacts may also be experienced.

It is against the City’s laws to produce excessive smoke and cause a nuisance. View the below for information about:

Development sites

Burning on a development site over 2000m2 is prohibited under the Environmental Protection Regulations 1987.
