Strong commercial growth has been driven by the development of Ellenbrook’s commercial and retail areas and expansion of the Midland commercial and retail sectors.

Midland is classified by the State Government as a Strategic Metropolitan Centre, one of eight throughout the metropolitan area but the only one where major state, interstate and metropolitan transport routes converge.

Due to its strategic location, the catchment area for Midland extends far beyond the City's boundaries and includes the rural catchment of Perth Hills, Chittering, Bindoon, Gingin, Toodyay, the Avon Valley and the Wheatbelt region.
 

With a forecast average annual population growth of 3.44 per cent, we expect our current 75,500 population will rise to 225,000 people by 2036.

As a result, future residential growth will occur on multiple fronts. This includes development of our 1100-hectare Urban Growth Corridor, which includes the suburbs of Bennett Springs, Brabham, Dayton, and parts of West Swan and Caversham. Continued growth at Ellenbrook and Aveley, future growth in Bullsbrook and Gidgegannup, and a significant number of urban infill opportunities are all expected.

The area is geographically vast, stretching over 1,044 square kilometres. It contains a unique blend of residential, commercial, industrial, special use and rural land.

There is a wide variety of locations including major commercial centres and industrial parks, suitable for all business types ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large industrial companies

Our location provides easy access to metropolitan, intrastate, national and international transport routes. The City's major air, rail and road transport networks service both passenger and freight demands.

Major investment and infrastructure projects include Perth Darwin National Highway, proposed intermodal transport hub in Bullsbrook, the Gateway WA project, NorthLink WA and the redevelopment of the Perth Airport, will further enhance connectivity.

We are located 15 kilometres from Perth's central business district and 10 kilometres from Perth's domestic and international airports.

WA shares the same time zone as many of Australia’s major trading partners. Being situated in the Perth metropolitan area, we are also well positioned to cater to the rapidly growing Asian economies.

There are 10,400 businesses providing employment to approximately 68,000 workers. The City's gross regional product (GRP) grew from $6.8 billion in 2007/08 to $11.37 billion in 2021/22.
Over the last decade:

• The number of people working in the City of Swan has increased by 9,000
• Industry output has increased by $3.1 billion
• Local sales are up by $1.5 billion
• Imports and exports have both increased by approximately $1.7 billion.

Almost 35 per cent of workers live within the city and 65 per cent travel from nearby local government areas. Over the next 30 years, a vast population increase will creating significant opportunity for ongoing economic growth and servicing local employment needs.
